While we do our best to speak plain English, we ARE aviation people, so sometimes an acronym slips out.

So, we’ve created this glossary,  designed to help our clients navigate the world of aircraft maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO). Whether you’re a first-time aircraft owner or a seasoned fleet operator, good communication is essential.  We do our best to help you get the most from our services and the local aviation environment.

Aircraft maintenance glossary

Aviation Maintenance & Operations Terms

AOG (Aircraft on Ground)

A situation where an aircraft is unable to fly due to a maintenance issue. AOG events require immediate attention to minimize downtime and operational disruptions.

Airworthiness Directive (AD)

A legally enforceable rule issued by the FAA to correct safety-related issues in aircraft, engines, avionics, or other components. Logue Aviation helps clients track and comply with all applicable ADs.

Base Maintenance

Major maintenance work performed at a designated maintenance facility, often including heavy inspections, overhauls, and extensive repairs.

CAMO (Continuing Airworthiness Management Organization)

A certified organization responsible for overseeing the airworthiness of an aircraft. Logue Aviation works with CAMOs to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.

CFD (Condition-Based Fault Detection)

A maintenance approach that monitors aircraft systems in real time to detect early signs of component failure before they cause operational issues.

CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System)

A digital platform used to schedule, track, and document maintenance activities. Logue Aviation utilizes CMMS technology to provide clients with up-to-date records and service planning.

Deferred Maintenance

Maintenance tasks that are postponed due to operational needs or lack of immediate safety concerns. We assist clients in managing deferred maintenance to avoid unexpected grounding.

Digital Aircraft Records

Electronic documentation of an aircraft’s maintenance history, inspections, and repairs. Logue Aviation partners with Vision Aircraft Records to provide seamless digital recordkeeping for Part 135 charter operators and private owners.

ELT (Emergency Locator Transmitter)

A safety device that transmits a distress signal in case of an aircraft accident. Ensuring ELT functionality is a critical part of pre-purchase inspections and routine maintenance.

FAA Part 91 / Part 135

Part 91: General operating rules for private aircraft owners.

Part 135: Regulations governing commercial air charter operators, including stricter maintenance and operational standards. Logue Aviation specializes in maintenance solutions for both categories.

FAR (Federal Aviation Regulations)

A set of rules established by the FAA governing all aspects of aviation in the U.S., including maintenance, operations, and pilot certification.

Field Maintenance

Repairs and maintenance performed outside of a fixed maintenance facility, often at the aircraft’s location. Logue Aviation provides mobile AOG support for field maintenance needs.

Heavy Maintenance

Extensive aircraft maintenance that involves detailed inspections, structural repairs, and complete system overhauls. This includes C-checks and D-checks, which are deep-level inspections required at specific flight-hour intervals.

MEL (Minimum Equipment List)

A list of components and systems that must be operational for an aircraft to be legally cleared for flight. We assist operators in managing MEL compliance to avoid regulatory issues.

Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI)

A comprehensive evaluation of an aircraft before purchase to identify potential maintenance issues, verify airworthiness, and assess regulatory compliance. Logue Aviation provides detailed PPIs tailored for Part 135 operators and fleet buyers.

Predictive Maintenance

A data-driven approach that uses real-time monitoring and historical trends to anticipate component failures before they happen. Logue Aviation incorporates predictive analytics to help clients reduce downtime and maintenance costs.

Service Bulletin (SB)

A manufacturer-issued recommendation for modifications or inspections to improve aircraft safety and performance. While SBs are not mandatory like Airworthiness Directives, they are often incorporated into best maintenance practices.

Scheduled Maintenance

Routine maintenance performed at specific time or usage intervals to ensure ongoing airworthiness and regulatory compliance.

STC (Supplemental Type Certificate)

An FAA-approved modification to an aircraft, engine, or component that alters its original design. Logue Aviation helps clients evaluate and implement STC upgrades, such as avionics enhancements and performance modifications.
